Atheists can be so closed to new ideas
Atheists can be so closed to new ideas Richard Lewontin wrote the quote you are about to read in January 1997 in The New York Review. Before you read the quote please let me give you my interpretation and you can post back and tell me if I’m off my rocker. It seems to me that Mr. Lewontin would never accept the possibility of an intelligent designer, a divine creator, or an supernatural event even if science were to clearly point in that direction. He (and all the other humanist clerics) seem to have a violent prejudice against God even when He reveals Himself clearly to us. I can pick up any complex object and determine it to be natural or created based on several principles. We wouldn’t expect an explosion at a factory to produce new life even when we have microorganisms all over that factory and yet Lewontin and the religious atheists would never tolerate the possibility of God’s creation of our universe and life itself - not because of the facts, but because of a bias he admits below: “We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door.” Come on! How unscientific can you be to make judgments based on your own desires and not the facts! Who needs more faith, the Christian with a primary cause (God, an infinite being created it all) or the atheist who won’t even consider the facts from an unbiased perspective? Go out and let those atheists know they need to be a little more open minded! Let’s make them stop the bigotry! |
