Darwin’s Racism - A post on another blog Wow, you really seem upset about this stuff. Let me just say that I’m a YECr and I have no problem linking to your site (except that you’re a bit more “free” with the language on your site than I am on mine) If you’ve got some interesting tid bits from science and scripture then let’s hear ‘em. I believe “iron sharpens iron.” I hope your site gets tons of hits and this debate becomes even more well known. On the racism issue - How do you get around the whole “The Origin of Species: By Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life” title issue? What did Darwin mean about favored races? What about this section of text from Descent of Man: At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes … will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla. - Charles Darwin, “The Descent of Man”, 2nd edition, New York, A L. Burt Co., 1874, p. 178 He seems at least a little racist in that bit doesn’t he? I respect Darwin. He was a man made in God’s image but I believe he got a few things wrong. He extrapolated too much from natural selection and he had some racist views. What do you think? OC
